Where Buried Treasure Generate
Buried treasure chests usually generate beneath sand, gravel, or similar blocks around beaches and ocean floors. Treasure maps are commonly found in shipwreck and ocean-ruin chests.

How to Find Buried Treasure
Precision matters more than excavation area: the treasure map can narrow the chest to a very small patch of coast or ocean floor.
What to Look For
- Find and hold a buried treasure map, then move until your marker reaches the red X
- Center the player marker carefully over the X before digging
- Clear sand and gravel methodically and check nearby sandstone or stone edges
Find Buried Treasure with Commands
Use /locate structure minecraft:buried_treasure in Java Edition. Bedrock syntax and returned positions can differ, so select the treasure entry from /locate structure autocomplete.
Common Search Problems
If the search is taking much longer than expected, check these common causes.
- The chest may sit under gravel, sandstone, or water rather than exposed sand
- A map marker at the edge means you are still outside the mapped area
- Digging a huge pit before centering on the X wastes time
